President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to commence construction of a brand-new health center building in Maalhos this year, even as several previously initiated projects in the island remain stalled.
Speaking during a meeting with Maalhos residents as part of his tour of the inhabited islands in Alif Alif Atoll, President Muizzu acknowledged the deteriorating condition of the current health facility, describing it as outdated and inadequate for patient care.
He assured the community that the project to redevelop the health center will be contracted out before the end of the year, with improvements also planned for laboratory services as part of the overall upgrade.
Further, as part of the visit Muizzu also presided over the signing of a major infrastructure agreement to modernize the island’s roads, pledging further development initiatives tailored to support local tourism and community needs.
The road development project, President Muizzu stated, will be carried out with consideration for the island’s growing local tourism industry and will be completed in line with the aspirations of Maalhos residents.
In addition to the roadworks, the president announced that a coastal protection project, including a designated public beach and a separate area for tourism use, will be included in next year’s budget. He emphasized that the initiative would benefit both the local community and tourism operators.
Muizzu also highlighted the designation of Ranfaru lagoon under Maalhos' jurisdiction, noting that it opens new economic opportunities for the island. He encouraged residents to submit development proposals and assured them of the government’s full support in advancing locally driven initiatives.
Tuesday’s visit also saw the official inauguration of Maalhos’ water and sewerage services, a project completed under the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
During the event, council members appealed to President Muizzu to expedite the long-stalled construction of the island’s school and football ground, both of which remain incomplete.
