As the Maldives observed the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Saturday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged the international community to turn its expressions of solidarity into concrete and meaningful action.
In his message, the president said that although the Maldives has marked this day since 1982, it continues to be overshadowed by sorrow.
He condemned Israel’s atrocities and the illegal crime of settlement expansion, stressing that the fragile nature of ceasefires shows that short pauses in hostilities cannot deliver lasting security.
Highlighting the suffering of the Palestinian people in their own land, Muizzu described the daily anxiety of losing lives and the destruction of homes as ongoing hardships endured by Palestinians.
He stated that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the establishment of justice, adding that no one should be marginalized in ensuring dignity and respect.
The president reiterated the Maldives’ unwavering support for the recognition of an independent Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on pre-1967 borders.
Further, he asserted that Palestine should be granted full UN membership and that its sovereignty and economic prosperity must be guaranteed without preconditions.
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed annually on November 29.
