Former Chairperson of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Hassan Latheef, has revealed that the current government has obstructed the party’s "Ran Reendhoo" run planned to be held in Hulhumalé in connection with MDP's 20th anniversary.
During a press conference held by MDP on Wednesday, Hassan Latheef said that the ‘Ran Reendhoo’ event is an activity to be held across the entire country, and they had decided to organize a run around Central Park from 4pm to 6pm on July 18.
He highlighted that they had sent a request for permission to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to hold the event. However, HDC refused to grant permission, citing it as a political activity. Hassan Latheef said that permission was given to hold the event in the wooded area of Hulhumalé Phase II.
However, he stated that they sent a second letter requesting to proceed with the run around Central Park, explaining that this is not a political activity and detailing all the arrangements for the event. Hassan Latheef said that despite providing detailed information, HDC failed to grant permission, and the government has obstructed this activity.
In addition to this, Hassan Latheef highlighted that all citizens would be able to participate in the ‘Ran Reendhoo’ run.
Hassan Latheef explained that the torch used in the ‘Ran Reendhoo’ running event mirrors the multiple work, services, and development brought to the country.
As the MDP marks its 20th anniversary with vibrant celebrations, the party has announced plans to carry out a series of activities across the country. In addition to this, gatherings are scheduled to be held on every inhabited island in connection with the anniversary.
