A person who has never held a position in the civil service has had their government-issued flat confiscated, after it was determined, based on what are claimed to be records from the commission, that they had not resided in Malé City for the required 15 years.
In a press release issued on Thursday regarding the matter, Fahi Union stated that a letter sent by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure on 25 June 2025, claimed that the person had worked at a school in Thaa Atoll from August 2012 to 2017, and that pension office records showed this. The letter stated that it could not be proven that the person had lived continuously in Malé City for 15 years, and therefore they did not meet the criteria for receiving a flat.
In response to a letter submitted to the Civil Service Commission regarding the issue, the commission stated that their records do not show that this person has ever held any position in the civil service. Further, in response to a letter sent to the Pension Office seeking information, that office stated that no funds had been deposited into the pension scheme under the individual’s name from August 2012 to 2017.
The statement read that they believe that the purpose of a state ministry perpetrating such a big deception, bringing forth matters that are clearly contrary to the truth, and working to unjustly take away flats from many poor people who have received them, is to gain illegitimate financial benefits by confiscating flats from many poor citizens and using those flats.
The union said that according to information being provided to the union by various parties, people associated with the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure are continuously working to obtain money illegitimately from various parties by promising to give them flats.
Fahi Union has condemned the work being done to unjustly take away flats from many people through blatant lies and deception, as well as the cunning efforts being made to gain illegitimate benefits.
