President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to promote greater gender equality and enhance women's participation in the People's Majlis.

On the occasion of International Day of Parliamentarism, Muizzu took to social media platform ‘X’ to shed light on the crucial role of lawmakers in maintaining democracy and promoting good governance.

In his message commemorating the International Day of Parliamentarism, he reminded that parliaments have a great responsibility to maintain transparency, formulate robust policies, and serve the people with care and trustworthiness.

Further, he highlighted that the low representation of women in legislative bodies is a significant issue, both in the Maldives and in various parts of the world.

The president concluded his message by calling for the upholding of principles established to strengthen legislative bodies and renewing the commitment to work faithfully in service of the people.

Despite Muizzu's remarks along these lines, the role of women in his own cabinet is quite limited. There are only two female ministers in the entire cabinet: Minister of Social and Family Development Dr. Aishath Shiham and Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr. Maryam Mariya.
