The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has issued a warning that adverse weather conditions may trigger flooding across large parts of the country.
The weather department issued a white alert nationwide from 1:30pm to 5pm on Saturday, warning of potential flooding and advising the public to exercise caution.
The weather is particularly severe across central and northern atolls. A white alert was issued from Haa Alif Atoll to Alif Dhaal Atoll from morning until 04:30pm on Saturday. During these hours, the Meteorological Service predicted heavy rain, thunder, and winds up to 40 miles per hour.
The office has forecasted that over the next 24 hours, seas will be moderately calm with moderate winds.
Due to the expected adverse weather and rough seas, the Maldives Meteorological Service has also advised caution while traveling.
The congested capital, Malé City experienced heavy flooding on Friday due to swell wave surges. As such, the carnival area was flooded, affecting cafés and restaurants operating in the vicinity.
The Maldives Meteorological Service noted that the country is currently in the midst of the southwest monsoon rainy season.
