MP for South Galolhu constituency, Meekail Ahmed Naseem has called for an independent and credible investigation into the widespread power outage that plunged Malé City and Hulhumalé into darkness on Sunday.
During the sitting of the People's Majlis held on Monday, as part of the preliminary debate on the bill to amend the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority Act, MP Meekail asserted that in his opinion, the most important signal for an international airport is the electricity service.
However, he stressed that on Sunday, the capital city of the Maldives and the international airport were without electricity, going on to reveal that the airport was without power for two hours.
The lawmaker noted that this is not an ordinary issue and that an independent investigation should be conducted. He expressed concern that the government has not commented on the issue, yet.
Noting that the public has no confidence in the investigations conducted by the current administration and relevant authorities, the lawmaker said that an investigation was carried out claiming that the Bank of Maldives (BML) was attempting to stage a coup. He also mentioned that it was the government that revealed the existence of a medical mafia and began an investigation into the matter as well. However, the lawmaker stressed that the outcome of none of these investigations is known to the public.
Further, Meekail called for a credible investigation into the power outage issue, stating that the public would want to know the outcome of investigations initiated under the “strong guidance” of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The lawmaker emphasized that the state should be governed based on clear principles, urging authorities to study international best practices and ensure national affairs are conducted in a way that does not place the country at a disadvantage.
