The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported a rise in communicable diseases of recent, urging the public to adopt precautionary measures to curb further spread.
The public health authority revealed that the number of reported cases of influenza has spiraled compared to the same period in 2024. Among the communicable diseases identified to be spreading currently, HPA has highlighted that Influenza and Covid-19 are the most frequently reported cases.
According to statistics publicized by HPA, from April 6 – May 17, 43,882 cases of common cold, 254 cases of Influenza, and 37 cases of Covid-19 have been reported.
HPA said that while the number of reported common cold cases has increased in all parts of the country during this period, the highest number of Covid-19 and Influenza cases have been reported from the Greater Malé Region.
In addition to this, HPA has revealed that the number of reported Dengue fever cases in 2025 is lower compared to the same period in 2024. This year, the highest number of Dengue fever cases have been reported from the Greater Malé Region, as well as Raa atoll, Kaafu atoll, and Alif Alif atoll.
According to statistics, 76 cases were reported in January 2025, 82 in February, 75 in March, 127 in April, and 86 cases in May.
The public health authority went on to reveal that although the number of reported Dengue fever cases declined during this period, due to the ongoing monsoon season in the Maldives, there is a possibility of an increase in mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue fever in the coming days.
Therefore, HPA has appealed on the public to continue taking precautionary measures against such diseases.
