Tourists in the Maldives

Despite an annual expenditure of two million pounds on tourism promotion, statistics indicate that tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom to the Maldives have not seen a significant increase.

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 93,043 tourists from the United Kingdom visited the Maldives by May 15.

The figures disclosed by the Tourism Ministry reveal that as of May 15, the most number of tourist arrivals were recorded from China. China, which was also at the top of the list in 2024, contributes 11.4 percent of the total tourist arrivals with 103,072 arrivals from the country.

Russia ranks second with 97,123 tourists, representing 10.8 percent of the total recorded by May 15.

The United Kingdom, ranking third, has contributes 10.3 percent with 93,043 tourists. Despite the government's initiative to promote Maldivian tourism by spending two million pounds annually through an agreement with Liverpool, the Premier League's top team, through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), the number of tourists from the UK has not changed significantly in the past month.

Among other important markets, 79,557 tourists arrived from Italy, while 69,238 tourists arrived from Germany to the Maldives as of May 15.

Despite President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's efforts to promote Maldivian tourism through meetings with prominent Indian film stars, India remains sixth on the list of countries sending the most tourists to the Maldives.

So far this year, a total of 48,471 Indian tourists have visited the Maldives.

As of May 15, 901,210 tourists visited the Maldives. According to the tourism ministry’s statistics, during the same period in 2024, 833,448 tourists visited the Maldives.

The majority of tourists visiting the Maldives stayed at resorts. 71 percent of the total tourists stayed at resorts. The percentage of tourists who stayed at guesthouses is 23.5 percent. The percentage of tourists who stayed at hotels is three percent and 2.5 percent of the total tourists stayed on safari vessels.
