Dr. Mohamed Munavvar, the head of the special commission established by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to investigate the case of 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed falling from H. Fentenoy onto the roof of an adjacent warehouse on April 18, has stated that it is true that President Muizzu had said he would not form an independent commission during his term.
President Muizzu formed the commission to investigate Yumnu's case on April 27. Initially, the commission included Munavvar, Brigadier General (Retired) Ahmed Mohamed, and Dr. Mohamed Habeeb. However, Habeeb resigned the next day, citing family ties with Raud Ahmed Zilal, the main suspect in the incident.
However, Munavvar said that the president's earlier statement about not forming such a commission was likely due to the existence of investigative and relevant authorities. However, he added that given the nature and sensitivity of the issue, a commission needed to be formed.
Munavvar also suggested that the president's earlier statement about not forming a commission implied more about utilizing relevant institutions for such investigations rather than a complete refusal to form commissions.
However, he added that if questions arise about the integrity of institutions responsible for handling such sensitive matters, then a commission needs to be formed.
Munavvar went on to state that the commission formed by Muizzu would work independently and assured the public of this. However, he clarified that if the public wants justice for the incident that occurred on April 18, the commission is not a body that establishes justice, and people should not be confused about this.
Munavvar added that ensuring state institutions investigate the matter fairly is something the commission should do, and that is the current target.
