The Ministry of Education has instructed schools not to provide information without the ministry's guidance, even if requested.

In an internal memo sent to schools on 9 July 2024, the Ministry of Education stated that in accordance with the Right to Information Act, schools are advised not to respond to information request forms submitted to schools without the ministry's guidance.

Although President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu came to power with a promise to run a transparent government, media and the general public have faced significant challenges in obtaining information from the government.

It has become increasingly common for questions submitted to government offices under the Right to Information Act to go unanswered even long after the deadline has passed. As a result, the situation has escalated to the point where the Information Commissioner’s Office has had to order government offices to provide information when they fail to do so.

Due to non-compliance with such orders, the Information Commissioner’s Office has taken action against some government offices as well.
