Education Minister, Dr. Aishath Ali declared that an extra allowance will be received by teachers who volunteer to travel to different islands to teach Quran.

During the press conference held by the Education Ministry in relation to the new academic year beginning on Tuesday, while answering a question asked by a reporter, Minister Aishath stated that Quran teachers had to be brought in from abroad to five schools within the Maldives, because no local volunteers came forward when constantly asked. The Minister affirmed that this step was taken in order to not bring a halt to the children’s education.

The Minister confirmed that there is not a lack of Quran teachers in Male’ but none are willing to go to teach in different atolls. Therefore, after discussing the matter with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, it has been decided that an extra allowance will be given to teachers who choose to travel to islands to teach Quran.

Furthermore, Minister Aishath declared that a Quran teachers training program has been arranged to be held this August in order to increase the number of Quran teachers in the Maldives. This program will move forward in the Islamic University’s Institution of Quran while prioritizing islands of the teachers choosing. The minister also affirmed that around 200 teachers will be trained in the course of this program.

The minister then stated that in the coming 10 years, such programs will be arranged for teachers in different fields.
