Shiyam reaffirms commitment; fishermen's dues to be settled in 48 hours
Shiyam emphasized that just as fishermen fulfill their financial obligations, the government will also meet its loan commitments

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has assured fishermen that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to pay for fish caught within 48 hours will remain unchanged. Despite the current practice of monthly payments, Shiyam emphasized that the promised swift payment timeline will be upheld.
Responding to a question posed by RaajjeTV during a press conference held at the President's Office to provide information about the work of the fisheries ministry, Minister Shiyam reassured that the promise to pay fishermen within 48 hours is one that will not be revoked.
He stated that if it's a promise related to fisheries in the current administration, they won't leave it unfulfilled and that there is work to be done to fulfill the promise.
Shiyam went on to admit that it was difficult to pay the fishermen.
The minister explained that payments could be expedited by streamlining MIFCO's operations but emphasized that significant work is needed to rightsize the company.
Further, he stated that the promise to pay within 48 hours will be fulfilled very soon, and that payment is being delayed due to the current fiscal situation.
Shiyam emphasized that just as fishermen fulfill their financial obligations, the government will also meet its loan commitments. He added that efforts will be made to ensure the price of fish remains above MVR 20 per kilo, though providing subsidies to MIFCO is not a feasible option.
