Major General Shiyam has massive budget to bribe lawmakers: MP Mahloof

There are 42 lawmakers aligned with the government in the 85-seat parliament

Major General Ahmed Shiyam has doled out a budget of ‘100 million’ in order to bribe opposition lawmakers and gain back a majority in parliament, alleges MP Ahmed Mahloof.

Mahloof, who is also the allied opposition parties’ spokesperson and one of the more expressive critics of the government, said this in a post on his Twitter account.

The post, typed out in Dhivehi, guarantees that lawmakers aligned with the opposition would not ‘fail the Maldivian people’ by accepting a bribe and ‘shifting ideologies’.

‘It is money that belongs to the people, please give it back to the people” his post closes,

There are 42 pro-government parliamentarians in the 85-seat house, currently, the remaining 43 are all aligned with the opposition.

The Supreme Court had this month ruled that twelve parliamentarians previously stated to have lost their seats have been reinstated.

A decision that the parliament secretariat had initially said it would enforce, but the sessions scheduled for this year have yet to be held.
