Dunya Maumoon on Tuesday said she has reaffirmed her commitment to serve the nation as an independent, after her resignation as state minister of health.
In a statement published on Twitter, Dunya said she is proud to have served as both the foreign minister in her previous position, and in the health sector, and that she applauds the government’s efforts.
She also said that former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is not just her father, but the father of the nation, and that it was her sincere hope to see him home.
Gayoom was arrested at his home right after his half-brother, incumbent President Abdulla Yameen declared the ongoing State of Emergency.
In the statement, Dunya said she supported her father to bring in President Yameen’s government in 2013, and that she is still willing to support her uncle and other political leaders to resolve the conflict through peaceful dialogue.
She also said she has refused to be bulled by different political forces and have remained an independent.
Dunya added that hastily introducing a multi-party democracy due to international pressure in 2004 to 2008 have been a failure, and that she therefore call upon the international community to support the Maldivian people and help them overcome the current crisis and to build a stronger democratic system.
I reaffirm my commitment to serving the nation, in my capacity, as an independent, more so now, given the status of our beloved country. Insha Allah pic.twitter.com/L5AwOKYEPC
