Foreign Secretary Ahmed Sareer met with Indian Ambassador to the Maldives, Akhilesh Mishra, on Wednesday.

In a tweet posted in the afternoon, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the two “discussed the ongoing political development” in the Maldives.

It further said that Sareer had reiterated the Maldivian government’s “firm commitment to work with international partners, including India”.

The meeting comes less than 24 hours after the Maldives parliament passed to extend the state of emergency by 30 days, despite India’s call to not extend it, ‘so that the political process in Maldives can resume with immediate effect’.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that ‘it is important that Maldives quickly returns to the path of democracy and the rule of law so that the aspirations of Maldivian people are met and the concerns of the international community are assuaged”.

India has, on multiple occasions, said that it is closely monitoring the situation in the Maldives.
