Two arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs

Two individuals have been arrested on suspicions of attempting to smuggle narcotics.

The arrests were made as part of an operation conducted in Villingili island of Gaaf Alif atoll, after receiving an intel report.

The operation was conducted on September 4, jointly by officers stationed on the island as well as officers from the Police Intelligence Unit.

Arrested in connection with the operation were Ali Mumthaz, 37 and native to Fonadhoo island of Laamu atoll and a Bangladeshi national named Irshad Mia, 29.

The boat the suspects were traveling on was stopped at sea and taken to Kooddoo harbor for inspection.

During the raid, officers confiscated substances suspected to be narcotics.

The suspected drugs weighed 126 grams.

Upon being presented to the Villingili Magistrate Court for their remand hearing, the two suspects were remanded for a 15-day period.

The Villingili Police Station is currently conducting further investigations in connection with the case.
