Former President of the MDP and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has been arrested.

Shahid was taken into custody on Monday night.

Police have confirmed the arrest of Shahid, 64, of H. Rabeeee Manzil, under a court order following allegations of sexual assault against a minor under the age of 18.

At the time of his arrest, Shahid had already officially announced his intention to contest the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primary for the 2028 presidential election. He had also launched his campaign activities and was actively meeting with the public, traveling to various islands across the atolls in addition to Male' City.
