Two individuals have been arrested and remanded in connection with a case of gang violence.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) sought a Criminal Court order to remand the two individuals, both Maldivian men.
The suspects, aged 22 years and 24 years respectively were remanded for a five-day period.
They have since been remanded at a custodial prison.
The reasons for ordering their remand, were that a sufficient amount of evidence was produced against the accused.
Officers confiscated a wrench, a pair of scissors and an iron chain that are believed to have been used in the assault as weapons, on the motorcycle the suspects were riding.
The police institution also received the arrests stemmed from an intelligence report that a group in which the suspects were involved with, had planned to assault another group in the capital.
Officers confiscated the items on the motorcycle, after arriving at the scene to stop the gang violence.
Due to this, there is reason to believe that they were fully prepared for a violent attack.
The reason for the remand was defined as Article 49 of the Maldives Constitution as well as Sections 59 and 60(b) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, were met.
The reason for the need for detention is that it is deemed to satisfy the requirements of Sections 4 and 6 of Section 13(c) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, relating to trial.
Police revealed that they followed the legal mandate, in arresting the two individuals.
The 24-year-old suspect involved in the case is to have claimed that the items confiscated were things that they usually carried around and that they were not used as weapons, and denied to have carried out any acts of violence.
