The council members of Nilandhoo island in Faafu atoll have urged the government to expedite the swift completion of the airport project.

This was done during a meeting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held with the island’s councilors and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members as part of his tour of several islands in Faafu atoll which he began on Saturday.

Discussions at the meeting revolved around the most pressing issues and concerns regarding development, facing the island community as well as the entire atoll.

The meeting saw Nilandhoo councilors shedding light on the importance of the airport project to revive economy and urged to fast-track its completion.

They also shed light on the significance of repairing the island's sewerage system, completing the water supply system as soon as possible, constructing the island’s roads and establishing an Islamic center on the island.

Further, they urged the government to build more housing units, ensure a new building is established for the council secretariat, to improve healthcare services on the island and to enhance the ferry system.

The president was also briefed on the need for a park to be established on the island, as well as efforts to enhance the island's socio-economic development.

Speaking at the meeting, Faafu Atoll Council members shared their concerns which mainly focused around development and issues linked to progress.

Listening to these concerns, the president assured them that he would address the concerns raised at the meeting in consultation with relevant authorities, to find an amicable solution for island residents.

The members of his cabinet that accompanied him on the tour provided updates on the ongoing initiatives by the administration aiming to address the issues raised by the councilors.

The meeting also saw the president assuring the councilors that the island will be developed into an urban center, with housing projects designed for urban living.
