The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) election has been announced, after the suspension of Club Valencia from all football activities.

The decision was reached by FAM’s Disciplinary Committee on Thursday.

Hassan "Dhona" Waheed who is a close associate of current president of FAM Bassam Adeel Jaleel, filed Valencia’s case at the association.

In his case, Waheed claimed that he was removed from the governing body of Valencia against the regulations and demanded that action be taken against those involved in the decision.

He has also pinned accusations of creating the documents related to his dismissal and said that everything was wrought to show that the club’s annual general meeting was held.

After thorough investigations in connection with the case, FAM’s Disciplinary Committee had ruled to suspend Club Valencia from all activities linked to football, until the governing committee is properly and lawfully elected, and until the elections of the club’s AGM and governing committee are held in accordance with the governing rules of the club, the regulations of FAM as well as the electoral code.

Club Valencia has also been given a seven-day deadline to appeal the decision.

Following the decision to suspend Club Valencia, FAM had consecutively announced their election, on Thursday.

The association has revealed that during the 25th meeting of FAM’s governing committee, it was decided that the election would be held within 45 days from Thursday.

The election is slated for 20 April 2024.

Interested individuals have been given until 16 March 2024 to submit their applications.

FAM had initially attempted to hold the election in the last week of January, however, they had to cancel the election after the issue of two candidates being endorsed by Club Valencia, escalated.

This came at a time former national team forward Ahmed "Tom" Thoriq, who was declared ineligible by the FAM's electoral committee, had taken up the matter with Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the regional football body Asian Football Confederation (AFC) as well.
