The government is to pursue policies to make high-quality medication available in the Maldives.
This was decided by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday.
The decision was reached following recommendations from his Cabinet of Ministers, after a cabinet meeting held on Sunday.
The decision was based on deliberations on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Health.
The cabinet meeting saw discussions revolving around ways to extend the bulk procurement approach for obtaining essential pharmaceuticals.
Further, the State Trading Organization (STO), the company tasked with providing essential medications without interference, would be tasked with ensuring the continuous availability of these medicines from all healthcare hospitals, centers and pharmacies established on all inhabited islands across the Maldives, under the new system.
Further, Muizzu also decided to set up warehouses to store medications adequately, which would meet the system’s mandated requirements.
He also decided to establish a central monitoring system using pioneering technology as well as to update research on the quantity and quality of ingredients in medicines.
In addition to this, the cabinet also committed to improve and increase human resources and boost the capacity to assure and maintain pharmaceutical quality.
