Next Parliament session on 31st of this month: Parliament

Only 14 sessions in the first three months

Only eight sessions held in this second sitting

Sessions halted after no confidence vote on Maseeh was submitted

Parliament Secretariat said the earliest possible date for the next Parliament session will be on the 31st of this month.

Parliament Secretariat said this was as this period coincided with the Independence Day celebrations and holiday. As such, there will be no Parliament sessions or Committee sessions until the 31st.

The sessions were halted after the no confidence motion on Speaker Abdullah Maseeh was submitted to the Parliament. A letter sent by Deputy Speaker Moosa Manik had stated that the no confidence motion was a null one, as several MPs backing the motion had lost their Parliament seats.

The opposition MPs have argued that only Supreme Court, and not the Elections Commission or Parliament, had the right to strip sitting MPs from their seats.

The reformist movement have repeatedly stated that there was a lot of influence on the issue from Elections Commission, Parliament and Judicial Justice system from the Government.

The second sitting of the Parliament started on June 5th; so far only eight sessions had been held.
