The Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) has revealed that those who wish to reregister for the second round of this year’s presidential election, will be allowed to do so from September 15 – 17.
EC announced this during a press conference held on Tuesday.
Speaking at the presser, Vice President of EC Ismail Habeeb stated that they will open for reregistration on September 15, 16 and 17.
Those who wish to change the location they have to go to vote may do so during this period, by submitting an application either online or by visiting the Election Centre.
Further, Habeeb revealed that they will also be opening a window for observers and monitors, as well as representatives of candidates to register in the second round.
However, representatives of candidates, observers and monitors will have to visit the Election Center to apply, and will not be permitted to apply online.
Highlighting that some political parties and the media have already completed issuing the number of passes mentioned in the law, Habeeb noted that more passes cannot be issued for them.
However, the opportunity to change the locations where they will be stationed will be given.
Political parties and media outlets that do not have passes adequate as stated in the law, will be given more opportunities as well.
Unless they reregister, those eligible to cast their votes will be registered to cast their votes in the same polling booths as the first round, in the second round as well.
A total of 282,395 individuals were eligible to vote in this year’s elections, however, only 80 percent cast their votes, making it the lowest voter turnout recorded in the country’s history in a presidential election.
Eight candidates competed in the first round.
As the simple majority of votes required was not reached by any candidate, front runners President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Dr. Mohammed Muizzu are headed for a run-off election.
According to Habeeb, the second round is slated for September 30 and voting will proceed from 8am to 5pm.
