Maldives Third-way Democrats (MTD) has revealed that former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor is suffering from a serious and life-threatening medical condition related to neurology.
In a Twitter post to provide the latest update of the former vice president’s condition to the public, MTD revealed that their leader is still admitted at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
The party revealed that he was diagnosed with a serious neurological medical condition after an extensive period of being locked up in solitary confinement from 2015 to 2018 in a cell on a round-the-clock basis for three years.
MTD stressed that his confinement was against all international conversations and Maldivian laws that classify such treatment as “inhumane”.
Highlighting that they will continue to closely monitor Adeeb’s condition as it unfolds and provide updates as they come, MTD revealed that he is currently doing better than when he was initially taken to the Emergency Room late Wednesday.
MTD revealed that the hospital’s team is working diligently to evaluate his condition and provide the necessary case promptly.
Adeeb was taken to the hospital after he lost consciousness, sometime after sundown on Wednesday.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, MTD’s Secretary General Ahmed Ashraf revealed that further tests are being conducted to determine Adeeb’s condition.
Adeeb, who is currently under house arrest, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after having been found guilty of the seven counts of charges in connection with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement case, back in October 2020.
Relevant authorities earlier revealed that Adeeb was moved to house arrest due to health issues linked to a respiratory illness.
Adeeb pleaded guilty to the seven charges raised against him during the preliminary stage of the trial.
The seven charges raised against Adeeb were two counts of involvement in corruption, two counts of using his position to gain undue benefits, two charges of money-laundering as well as an abuse of power charge.
Further, he was slapped with a fine totaling MVR two million in addition to the jail sentence.
