State budget 2023: road development in more than 50 islands

Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has stated that work to develop the roads in more than 50 islands, will be carried out in 2023.

Minister Ameer said this while submitting the state budget proposed for 2023, during Monday’s sitting of the People’s Majlis.

As such, Minister Ameer stated that a total of MVR 1,456.3 million has been allocated for projects to construct roads and reclaim land, under the PSIP budget.

This comprises of 17.3 percent of the entire PSIP budget and the biggest expenditure is expected to be for land reclamation in different islands.

Ameer noted that MVR 291.8 million will be funded through the loan for the second phase of the land reclamation project in Gulhifalhu of Kaafu atoll.

The second phase of Gulhifalhu land reclamation revolves around the purpose of expanding logistics-related work and other industrial work once the port development has been completed.

Further, MVR 171,6 million has been allocated through the Indian government line of credit, for projects to develop the roads of Addu and reclaim land in the southernmost city.

Ameer also revealed that a total of MVR 411.9 million is expected to be spent for all of the road development projects initiated and awarded by the government.

MVR 23.5 billion is to be spent for newly launched road development projects in some roads as well.
