Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested two individuals in possession of alcohol, in Maafushi island of Kaafu atoll.
The arrests were made in an operation conducted under efforts to curb the smuggling and trafficking of alcohol and drugs in the Maldives, conducted by the police institution.
The operation was conducted jointly by the police stationed in Maafushi island and police intel, on August 19.
Two men aged 20, were arrested in connection with the operation.
The two men were arrested following a tip-off to police, regarding an alcohol smuggling attempt in Maafushi.
Officers halted the two men and searched them, upon which they were found in possession of 47 bottles of alcohol.
Upon being presented to the Maafushi Magistrate Court for their remand hearing, one of the suspects was released, while the other was given 10 days in remand, at a remand facility allocated by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The case is currently being investigated by the Maafushi Police Station.
