The government aims to pave opportunities for students to obtain further education and maximize their potential, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
He said this in his statement at the awarding ceremony of the President’s Award and High Achievers Scholarship for GCE A-level high achievers in the year 2021, held at Ghiyasuddin International School on Tuesday.
Shedding light on the accomplishments of previous recipients of the President’s scholarships, President Solih added that several former students chose a career in medicine.
With this, he expressed support for their perception on choosing a path that will benefit the nation in the long run.
Further, he went on to shed light on education and skill development prospects, stressing on the increase in training programs provided by the government.
As such, saying that efforts to establish TVET Centers and Junior Colleges are currently underway in two islands, the president noted that similar facilities will be established in additional islands soon.
Going on to shed light on the initiative to provide affordable education, President Solih noted that 14,711 students have enrolled in the free degree programme initiated by the government, so far and that 4,696 students have already graduated.
Emphasizing on the significance of ensuring equitable access to education, President Solih stressed on the technological advancements and innovative solutions initiated by the government including satellite schooling to cater to students in all islands, regardless of size or population.
The president also noted the establishment of secondary education in seven islands and the introduction of higher secondary education in three additional islands.
Noting that the students in attendance at the ceremony were about to enter a dynamic world with different cultures and societal norms, the president advised the students to be wary of negative and undue influences that could sway them away from their true objectives.
The president also pushed students to remain true to their own identities, heritage, culture and most importantly their Islamic faith that will guide them in the righteous path.
Six students who achieved the highest results in the GCE A-level examinations were conferred scholarship letters at Tuesday’s ceremony.
They were five students from the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) and one from Kulhudhuffushi Jalaluddin School, all female.
President Solih congratulated the recipients and wished them success in the future.
