President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has discussed development needs of the residents of Funadhoo island in Shaviyani atoll, with the island council.
The president met the island council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members of Funadhoo island as part of his ongoing visit to two northern islands, on Saturday.
The meeting saw Funadhoo councilors expressing gratitude to the president and incumbent administration for assuring them of continued developmental progress, including land reclamation and coastal protection work.
Discussions also touched upon the need to develop the roads leading to the airport, bringing changes to the harbor before commencing RTL Ferry services as well as concerns revolving around the football ground and youth center development projects.
The president expressed commitment to ensure able development of all islands, despite the political views of their respective communities.
During the event held to mark the Funadhoo School’s golden jubilee celebrations on Friday, the president announced a few development plans for the island, stating that the land reclamation project will commence in 2023, while coastal protection work is scheduled to begin soon.
The president also announced that funds will be earmarked in the budget next year to establish an additional administrative building, as the development of 15 classrooms currently proceeds.
He also revealed that the construction of a new hospital building will commence soon.
As part of his visit to Funadhoo, the president also met with the senior management of Shaviyani Atoll’s healthcare facilities to discuss challenges and opportunities to further healthcare services, addressing budget constraints, human resource shortages and difficulties in procuring medical and pharmaceutical supplies.
The president revealed his plans to improve healthcare services across the country and said he will find ways to ease any challenges facing communities.
President Solih also visited some government offices and institutions including the Funadhoo Police Station and the Family and Children’s Service Center, also having inspected the beach area affected by coastal erosion.
A high-level delegation of government officials accompanies the president on the trip, where the president will also visit Holhudhoo Island in Noonu atoll.
