The government needs to do more to ensure workplace security for Bangladeshi workers, says Vice President Faisal Naseem.

He said this during a meeting with the High Commissioner of the People's Republic of Bangladesh to Maldives, Rear Admiral S.M. Abul Kalam Azad on Wednesday.

The Bangladeshi HC called on VP Naseem at the President’s Office.

The call saw discussions held regarding mutual interests and areas of cooperation between the two countries including people-to-people interactions, trade, healthcare, tourism as well as opportunities to progress human resources.

Ensuring that the Bangladeshi worker community received timely vaccination during the Covid-19 pandemic due to the government’s vaccine equity policy, the Bangladeshi HC extended gratitude to the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the assistance provided to the Bangladeshi workers during the pandemic.

Appreciating the contribution by the Bangladeshi workforce in the Maldives, towards the country’s development, VP Naseem stated that the government highly prioritizes ensuring workplace security and safety for workers.

However, he stated that more needs to be done on this front.

Highlighting that the administration has been working on the regularization of migrant workers, the vice president stressed on the need for more Bangladeshi workers in the field, following the rise in developmental projects across the nation.

Discussions also revolved around successful high-level visits by leaders of the state and government from both countries, which further reinforced the relationship between Maldives and Bangladesh.

VP Naseem and the Bangladeshi High Commissioner expressed commitment to further solidify relations between the two friendly nations.

Diplomatic relations were established between Maldives and Bangladesh on 22 September 1978.
