An appeal hearing on the murder case of Abdul Muheeth (Bobby) was held at the High Court on Tuesday.

Two men were sentenced to death over the murder of Muheeth, by the Criminal Court on May 2019.

Charges were raised against three persons, Ali Mushafau, S. Maradhoo, Sultunvilla, Mohamed Maimoon, Lh. Naifaru, Zaithoonige, and Muhjad Ahmed Nasih, G.Dh. Gahdhoo, over the murder of Bobby. The Criminal Court found Mohamed Maimoon and Muhjad Ahmed Nasih guilty of the murder in early May, 2019 but found Ali Mushahfau not-guilty.

Maimoon and Muhjad, both appealed to the judge to be given the chance to hire a defense lawyer.

Judge Hathif Hilmee gave the suspects a final chance of 10 days to hire lawyers. He stated that the next hearing would proceed even if the suspects are not able to hire a lawyer by then.

The preceding Judges over this case are, Hathif Hilmee, Hussain Shaheed, Fathmath Faruheeza.

Muheeth’s family wants Qisas or retributive justice for his murder, according to Islamic and Maldivian law.

During the gang assault on 18 February 2012, Muheeth was stabbed 20 times and the brutality of the attack split his skull.
