Another Maldivian has succumbed to complications of Covid-19.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that the victim was identified as a Maldivian man aged 79.
Doctors at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) pronounced him dead at around 3:12am on Thursday shortly after he was wheeled into the Emergency Room.
This has pushed the country’s Covid-19 death toll to 264 and comes two days after the last fatality was confirmed, on January 4. The last victim was an 82-year-old Maldivian man who was pronounced dead by doctors at the Addu Covid Management Facility at around 2:30am on Tuesday.
This is the second Covid-19 fatality to have been confirmed this ongoing month.
The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 50 deaths were confirmed in June last year while 10 deaths were reported in July. In August, five Covid-19 patients succumbed to the virus, September also saw five Covid-19 fatalities. 12 Covid-19 fatalities were reported in October followed by seven in November. December also saw 12 Covid-19 fatalities.
212 Covid-19 victims were reported last year.
