Under its Community Fund initiative, Bank of Maldives has opened a reading park in Thoddoo island of Alif Alif atoll.

A leading teacher from Thoddoo School lead the project with an aim to inspire the community to pick up the habit of reading, all the while providing a convenient space for readers.

The project also aims to inspire family bonding as well as to instill community engagement.

Equipped with a mini library, the reading part has seating arrangements in addition to swings for parents who visit the park, as well as the traditional ‘Joali’.

It features games including chess and dominos which will help children develop motor skills and the park was designed as a garden. The reading park has labelled plants, which will help children learn and gain knowledge from surrounding environment.

There is no park in the island for the children and the only library we have is the one in the school. The idea of the project is to instill love for reading among children in our community. The reading park will help children to visit with family and meet their friends and study together. I want to thank BML for the support in completing a very essential project for this island”
Adam Afsal, teacher from Thoddoo School.

The community fund campaign aims to empower individuals to contribute to the society by conducting sustainable community projects across the Maldives.

BML has supported initiatives benefitting the communities of 55 islands so far. The bank extends appreciation to individuals and NGOs for ideas and tireless work to deliver the projects even in the face of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Bank of Maldives will be awarding MVR 50,000 to the selected projects under the community fund initiative in the areas of education, environment, sports and community development. MVR one million is awarded each year.

Five winning proposals are selected during each quarter.
