Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh calls on Vice President
Dr A.K Abdul Momen, Bangladesh’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has requested the government of Maldives to assist in registering and regularizing unregistered Bangladeshi workers in the island nation.
The Bangladeshi foreign minister made the request during a meeting on Monday, as part of VP Naseem’s ongoing two-day official visit to Bangladesh.
During the call, Minister Momen requested the Maldivian government’s assistance in registering and regularizing unregistered Bangladeshi expatriate workers in the country, given the large community of already registered Bangladeshi workers in the Maldives.
The meeting saw the pair engage in discussions regarding boosting people-to-people and government-to-government connections between Maldives and Bangladesh, the Covid-19 pandemic as well as decentralization.
Discussions were also held on signing agreements for cooperation in different sectors, including shipping, maritime cooperation as well as technical training.
Expressing gratitude to the Bangladeshi minister for the warm welcome, VP Naseem shed light on the long-standing close relations both countries have enjoyed over the years and went on to express appreciation to the government of Bangladesh for the assistance provided to the Maldives over the years, particularly during the pandemic.
Further, he thanked the Bangladeshi government for supporting Maldives’ presidency candidacy in the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Stressing that challenges that need to be addressed were unveiled due to the pandemic, especially linked to availability of decentralized healthcare, VP Naseem noted that the government of Maldives considers the provision of decentralized healthcare services across the nation as an urgent need.
With this being said the pair engaged in discussions regarding cooperation between Maldives and Bangladesh, to achieve this goal.
Shedding light on the close friendship between the two countries, the Bangladeshi minister noted that they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of independence and the centennial birth anniversary of the founding leader of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. With this he thanked the president of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for joining their Independence Day celebrations back in March 2021.
The meeting was joined by Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem as well as Dr. Ibrahim Hassan, Minister of Higher Education who also held discussions with the Bangladeshi minister on bilateral cooperation in their respective sectors.
VP Naseem and the Maldivian delegation attended a special dinner hosted by the Bangladeshi foreign minister, following the conclusion of the meeting.
The vice president departed on the official visit on Sunday night and is scheduled to visit many strategic institutions. He is also scheduled to hold meetings with several senior representatives and key stakeholders during the visit.
Accompanied by a delegation of Cabinet Ministers and high-level officials from the government and the President’s Office, VP Naseem will return to the Maldives on Wednesday.
Upon arrival, the vice president toured the Bangabandhu Museum where he received a guided tour and signed the visitor's book, following which he paid a visit to the Bangladesh-Korea Technical Training Centre (BKTTC), where he was received by the Minister of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Imran Ahmad. He then held discussions on partnerships in developing technical capacity in the Maldives, especially in the areas of healthcare and education.
