Authorities are searching for a missing four-year-old after a sea incident caused by extremely rough seas, took the life of a woman.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the speed boat was enroute to Vaavu Atoll from capital Malé City, before being swamped by raging waters near Olhuveli Resort, at around 5:06pm on Saturday.
Three individuals were onboard at the time of the incident, and one of them was reported dead, while a four-year-old child has been reported missing after falling into the sea.
The deceased has been identified as a 33-year-old Malé native, Mariyam Naahidha who was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Guraidhoo Health Center at around 6:35pm. One out of the three onboard is currently receiving treatment in the health center and is in stable condition.
The speed boat has since been pulled into the lagoon of Guraidhoo island in Kaafu atoll and police officers are active in the area. Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)’s Coastguard vessel Shaheed Ali is currently active in the search for the missing child.
