849 tourist accommodation establishments are currently operational across the Maldives, with 50,504 beds.
According to the latest statistics publicized by the Ministry of Tourism, the operational tourist facilities by the end of August include 540 guesthouses, 156 resorts, 143 liveaboard vessels and 10 hotels.
Of the over 50,500 beds operating nationwide, 36,932 are across resorts and marinas, 9,382 in guesthouses, 2,828 in liveaboard vessels and 1,360 across hotels.
As at the end of August, guesthouses and resorts are operational across 20 atolls.
As such, two resorts and 10 guesthouses are operating in Haa Alif atoll, five guesthouses, one hotel and one resort in Haa Dhaal atoll, whereas seven resorts and six guesthouses have resumed operations across Noonu atoll.
Further, two resorts and three guesthouses have opened its doors to tourists in Shaviyani atoll, with Raa atoll having 12 operational resorts and two guesthouses.
Lhaviyani atoll currently have four guesthouses and 10 resorts, whereas 53 resorts and 213 guesthouses alongside five hotels are operational across Kaafu atoll.
The ministry added that 36 guesthouses, one hotel and 16 resorts are offering their services across Baa atoll and 109 guesthouses as well as 10 resorts are operational across Alif Alif atoll.
In Alif Dhaalu, there are 62 operational guesthouses, 16 resorts and one hotel.
Vaavu atoll currently has 43 guesthouses and three resorts in operation, whereas Dhaalu atoll has one guesthouse and eight resorts providing services.
Currently, two resorts and two guesthouses are operating across Meemu atoll, three guesthouses and two resorts in Laamu atoll as well as four guesthouses and one resort in Faafu atoll.
Tourism ministry went on to reveal that 17 guesthouses have resumed operations in Fuvahmulah City, with nine guesthouses, one resort and one hotel operational in Seenu atoll, as well as five guesthouses and three resorts in Gaaf Dhaal atoll.
Thaa atoll currently has three guesthouses and one resort.
By the end of August, a total of 755,966 tourist arrivals have been recorded, with 143,599 having been welcomed during August. This is a 3.1 percent increase from the arrivals recorded in the same period of 2019. Due to border closure on 27 March 2020, arrivals recorded during this period was significantly low.
Recently, authorities revealed that tourists who have not completed the Covid-19 vaccination will be barred from checking into guesthouses established in residential islands. As such, only those who have passed the limit of 14 days after completing both doses of the vaccine can check in to local guesthouses.
Maldives reopened borders on 15 July 2020, nearly four months since borders were closed and at first, resorts and liveaboard vessels were given the green light to begin operations. Guesthouses outside of the Greater Malé Region were permitted to resume operations on 15 October 2020. Authorities allowed the reopening of guesthouses in the capital region on 14 December 2020.
