An individual has been arrested in relation to the violent attack on 50-year-old Mariyam 'Mandhy' Zubair at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s head office earlier this week.

Police confirmed the arrest of a 39-year-old man in relation to the attack which left Mariyam with a head wound.

The attack, which happened on Thursday, was reported to police around 12:30 in the afternoon. Mariyam has now been discharged after being treated at ADK Hospital.

She is the mother of South-Galolhu constituency MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, who stated that the attack had no political intent, but was simply the attack of somebody under the influence of drugs.

MDP in a statement said that the party will not tolerate such harmful malicious acts, and called for the police to investigate and take the necessary action as soon as possible. The party itself has also reported the matter to police.

According to reports, Mariyam's attacker was an employee at MDP office by the name of Ahmed Jazeel.
