Vice President Faisal Naseem made the statement during a meeting with South Korea's new Ambassador to Maldives Jeon Woonjin

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Maldives, Jeon Woonjin, paid a courtesy call on Vice President Faisal Naseem on Tuesday morning at the President’s Office.

During the meeting, Vice President Faisal Naseem stated that Korea had remained an “international ally” and an important “development partner” to the Maldives for almost 55 years. He then thanked Korea for supporting Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid during his campaign for Presidency of the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the elections held in June, earlier this year.

Naseem highlighted that South Korea had greatly aided individual public empowerment in the Maldives and provided assistance in the fields of education and higher education in addition to contributing training and development opportunities.  Both parties also discussed further approaches of collaboration between the two nations, focusing on tourism, education and higher education sectors.

Both the VP and Ambassador affirmed that both nations hope to see more joint cooperation in the international area, especially towards the climate emergency. Ambassador Woonjin highlighted the fact that being island nations, both parties would have similar interest in “negating the adverse effects” of climate change like sea level rise and air pollution.

Concluding the meeting, VP and Ambassador Woonjin expressed their anticipation to continue to work together on a global scale.
