President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed have returned from an unofficial visit to Sri Lanka.

The first couple arrived at Velana International Airport (VIA) a little past 8am on Friday.

One of the most important highlights of the president’s unofficial visit to Lanka is the meeting with President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, on Thursday.

The leaders engaged in discussions regarding challenges posed by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic at the Presidential Secretariat of Sri Lanka, in Colombo. Discussions revolved around a number of topics including the commitment of both countries in ensuring further strengthening of the cooperation between Maldives and Sri Lanka, over the years ahead.

High Commissioner of Maldives to Sri Lanka Omar Abdul Razzak and the Maldives' Special Envoy for Climate Change Sabra Noordeen accompanied President Solih during the meeting.

The first couple departed on the trip on July 20, two days after concluding their three-island tour of South Thiladhunmathi atoll.

This was the first couple’s second unofficial visit abroad since last month. The president and first lady visited Dubai, United Arab Emirates earlier in June after the death of the president’s sibling, Ahmed Mohamed Solih who succumbed to complications of cancer while receiving treatment in the middle-eastern nation.
