Maldives has reported a 70-year-old Maldivian man as the country’s 213th coronavirus victim.
According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the latest Covid-19 victim was pronounced dead by doctors at the Gaaf Dhaal atoll Covid Management Facility at 1:55pm on Thursday.
Maldives reported its first Covid-19 fatality in April 2020.
This was the second Covid-19 fatality reported on Thursday; an 81-year-old Maldivian woman passed away while receiving treatment at the GA Covid Management Facility in Villigillli island early Thursday morning.
Of the total number of deaths to Covid-19, 163 have been reported thus far in 2021.
The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 50 deaths were confirmed in June while two deaths were reported on the first day on July.
With daily Covid-19 cases soaring above 1,000 into the beginning of May, authorities responded by strengthening Covid-19 precautionary measures and guidelines in place. However, due to declining case numbers over recent weeks, authorities have since eased measures thrice round. The latest eases effective Thursday, allow residents of the congested capital to go out during non-curfew hours without a permit. The curfew is still effective however, the hours have been reduced from 8pm to 4am.
