Investigators have identified eight suspects that are linked to the assassination attempt on Speaker and former President Mohamed.

Noting that the investigation into the attack is ongoing at a fast pace, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at a press conference on Tuesday evening revealed that police are investigating eight suspects in relation to the bombing in capital Male’ on May 6.

Sharing the latest updates on the investigation, Solih further disclosed that the investigations into four of these suspects have concluded and will be forwarded for prosecution “soon”.

The president further assured that he is closely monitoring the investigation, adding that they are also working to improve and strengthen the country's intelligence agencies. He noted that the commission formed to conduct an overview of the agencies has almost completed its work as well.

Further, President Solih expressed hope that parliament committee on national security services –or the 241 committee– sends him their report on the security breach inquiry so that he can take the necessary measures accordingly.

While the 241 committee had said that it will begin work on the report on Tuesday after completing the inquiry, Chair Mohamed Aslam said that they have not made a decision on sharing the full report with the president or any other officials. However, a redacted one will be shared.

Nasheed was the target of a remote controlled bomb in capital Male’ City on May 6. He had just left his house and was about to get into his car when a bomb attached to a motorbike exploded.

While the former president was rushed to ADK Hospital immediately, he underwent 16 hours of surgery to remove shrapnel from his lungs, abdomen and liver. He traveled to Germany for further treatment on May 13 following approval from his doctors here.

Police had previously revealed that four suspects arrested in connection to the attack supported extremist ideologies. Further, 10 others were arrested in the counter-terrorism operation launched following the blast, with raids in 25 areas.

At a press conference held on June 6, police said that they were “satisfied” with the speed of the investigation.
