This has pushed the country's Covid-19 death toll to 209

A 51-year-old expatriate has fallen victim to Covid-19 complications, in the Maldives.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the latest Covid-19 victim was a Bangladeshi man.

The man was brought to Haa Alif Atoll Hospital and declared dead by doctors at 11:30am.

With this, Maldives Covid-19 death toll has risen to 209, of which 160 has been reported thus far in 2021.

Maldives reported its first Covid-19 fatality in April 2020.

The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. June follows closely with 48 deaths reported thus far.

With daily Covid-19 cases soaring above 1,000 into the beginning of May, authorities responded by strengthening Covid-19 precautionary measures and guidelines in place. Since then cases have been declining gradually, as well hospitalizations.
