The victims of a tornado that swept through Addu City on the night 17th May have now been rehabilitated at their homes, the Mayor Abdulla Sodiq has said.

Mayor Sodiq told RaajjeMV that those displaced by the tornado, which had caused no injuries but damaged several houses, are now back to living in their usual conditions.

The roofs of several houses had been torn apart in the tornado, they have now been repaired. However, the mayor said that there are small-scale repairs yet to be made.

Said repairs include replacing fixtures and furniture’s, as well utensils that were damaged by the flooding.

The total repair cost exceeds MVR 5 million, Mayor Sodiq said.

Residents of up to 13 houses were left without shelter after the tornado hit the region and destroyed their homes at around 10:00 pm that night.

Mayor Sodiq then told RaajjeMV that these residents have been provided with temporary shelter at houses unaffected by the tornado.

While the military’s rescue forces and the police are active in the area, most of the displaced families are safe - residing with friends and relatives.

The tornado had also affected several office buildings, sweeping away the roofs of Ceylinco Insurance’s outlet in the district and store named Island Bookshop. It had even brought down three large trees at the center of Hithadhoo.
