RaajjeTV is to host a telethon titled “Maldives with Palestine” to assist the people of Palestine, submerged in violent attacks targeted by the nation-state of Israel.
The privately-run television station’s Head of Programmes and Coordination Amir Saleem revealed that the purpose of hosting the telethon is to pave way for Maldivian communities to extend their generous assistance to the Palestinian people at a time several fellow Muslims including women and children, living in occupied territories are being slain.
The telethon aims to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and fulfill the station’s social responsibility in this important cause.
“Maldives with Palestine” will begin at 6am on Friday and will run until 6am the next day, for a period of 24 hours.
Contributors will have access to purchase a number of items to be sold in front of Fonifonimaage in Henveiru-ward of the Maldives capital city, where RaajjeTV is located. During the telethon, to be aired live, a bank account number for donations will also be publicized.
The telethon will see some special appearances and important historical information shared with the public.
RaajjeTV is currently running all of the required preparations to kick start the telethon this weekend, with this being, the station has previously concluded many such telethons successfully. As such, it’s “Maldives with Rohingya” telethon was hosted during September 2017 to assist the Rohingya Muslims, being targeted for inhumane treatment by the Burmese authorities and groups. During the telethon RaajjeTV amassed up to MVR five million.
RaajjeTV's initiative comes at a time the government has suspended all relations with Israel including a ban on Israel products, effective since 2014, due to atrocities targeting the Palestinian people. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also condemned Israel’s actions in a series of Twitter posts, stating that Israel continues to violate international law by forcefully evicting Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah, and escalating attacks on Muslims offering prayers in the Al Aqsa complex.
The government reiterates that Maldives’ stance on the matter is clear and that the island nation stands against injustice.
Colors of the Palestinian flag are splayed all across Maldives as the public continues to show support to the people of Palestine, with some citizens planting the flag of Palestine on their balconies and outside their households, uniting on social media to call on the boycott of Israeli products and tourists.
International media has confirmed that the recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have killed at least 197 Palestinians including over 90 women and one in three of those killed being children.
In a statement released earlier this week the People's Majlis also condemned the forced displacement of Palestinian families from their homes, damage to property and attacks by Israeli military forces which targeted unarmed worshippers at the Al-Aqsa mosque during the fasting month of Ramazan. The People's Majlis declared that these acts of inhumane attacks by the nation-state of Israel against the people of Palestine was clearly a violation of international law, which could have repercussions on wider multilateral efforts to establish peace in the Middle-East.
At an emergency summit held for foreign ministers of OIC member-states earlier this week the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid also made a stand against Israel’s violence against Palestine.
