Australian Federal Police to assist in probe into explosion attack

A team from the Australian Federal Police will be arriving in the Maldives to assist in investigations into the explosion attack which targeted Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed outside his residence in Maldives capital Malé City on Thursday night.

Investigations are currently being conducted by the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defense Force, into the blast which rocked the center of Malé City where Nasheed’s house is located.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih revealed that the probe will receive the assistance of foreign professionals, during a press briefing held late Thursday. The president has instructed relevant authorities to run thorough investigations to see the perpetrators behind the cowardly terror attack to be brought to justice.

The team from Australian Federal Police is expected to arrive in the Maldives on Saturday.

Addressing the public regarding the attack, the president strongly condemned the attempt on the former president’s life and described it as an attack on the economy and democracy of the island nation.

During his address the president noted that such acts of terror will not be tolerated in the Maldives.

Nasheed is currently in stable condition after having undergone three successful surgeries due to injuries attained in the blast. Another important procedure still remains, ADK Hospital revealed via its latest Tweets, adding that a specialty team of doctors have been attending to the former president since he was rushed to the hospital. Nasheed was initially treated for flesh wounds, however doctors found the need for further surgeries through an assessment made.

Alongside the leader of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), four others got injured including a British national who is believed to be the Chairman of Myna Investments, as well as three officers.
