A no-confidence motion presented to the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s parliamentary group against the President of the Anti-Corruption Commission Mariyam Shiuna has failed to pass on Sunday.
Only 13 members of the MDP parliamentary group are reported to have voted in favor of the motion, which was submitted at a time former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has accused the ACC of negligence in investigating state corruption in the acquisition of ventilators for Covid-19 patients. The ACC was investigating suspected corruption in the government's acquisition of ventilators under the leadership of former Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen, whereby the Health Ministry had issued MVR 30.91 million to Dubai's Executors General Trading, without a prior guarantee as an advance payment for 75 ventilators.
The vote for the no-confidence motion against ACC President Mariyam Shiuna was held on Sunday morning, by the MDP PG group, which enjoys a supermajority at parliament. The motion was submitted by MP for the Inguraidhoo constitution Hassan Ahmed (Hassantey).
Following the failure of the motion, MP for the Alifushi constituency Mohamed Hussain Rasheed (Bigey) presented a second motion, to have the People's Majlis Independent Institutions Committee hold an inquiry into the alleged negligence on behalf of the ACC in this case.
This second motion also failed to pass, after securing just 14 votes in its favor.
The meeting was chaired by leader of the MDP PG Group and MP for the Henveiru-Central constituency Ali Azim, who concluded that neither of the two motions had passed.
