127 people tested positive for Covid-19 from 3,151 samples tested by authorities for the infection on Sunday, bringing the nation's total Covid-19 tally up to 16,783.

A total of 433,954 samples have been tested for Covid-19 in the country thus far, and there are currently 2,117 active cases of the infection in Maldives, of which 207 correspond to those receiving in-hospital care. 55 people have died from Covid-19 related health complications in the Maldives thus far.

The most recent death was confirmed by authorities on Sunday afternoon when a 60-year-old local woman being treated for the infection on the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital passed away. Also, on Sunday morning, 38-year-old Abdulla Iyad Ahmed, who was being treated for Covid-19 in Dubai, UAE, passed away after spending over two weeks in a coma.

Of the 127 additional cases reported on Sunday, 92 corresponded to new cases confirmed in the Greater Male' area and 15 cases from inhabited islands. A further 13 cases were from operational resorts, and seven cases were reported from non-operational resorts

An additional 48 recoveries from the infection were reported between 6pm Saturday and 6pm Monday, bringing the total number of Covid-19 recoveries observed in the Maldives to 14,604.

The number of people being treated in hospitals for Covid-19 has stayed the same between Saturday and Sunday at 207. Three people have passed away from Covid-19 in the Maldives in the on-going month of February alone, and authorities have warned that the nation's already strained healthcare system could become overwhelmed if the spread of the virus is not controlled.

As per the latest vaccination update released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), an additional 2,898 persons were vaccinated between Saturday and Sunday evening. 2,375 of this number were inoculated in the Greater Male' region, with 523 others being administered doses of the Covid-19 shot in different atolls.

With this, a total of 9,752 persons have been immunized against Covid-19 in the Maldives in the first week, with 7,963 vaccinated in six centers in the Greater Male' area and 1,789 others receiving their shots through 14 vaccination centers in atolls.

Sunday saw a nationwide mask-mandate come into effect across all inhabited islands of the country, with authorities warning that they would be taking immediate action against those who fail to comply with Covid-19 health and safety regulations at this time. A curfew and vehicle movement restriction order have also been implemented in the capital of Male', measures which proved effective in controlling the spread of Covid-19 in the city during the first and second waves of the pandemic last year.
