Another local man has succumbed to complications from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, making it the 51st victim from the infection, in the Maldives.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that the 86-year-old passed away at around 4:27pm on Sunday.

He was being treated at the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital at the time of his passing.

76 patients are now admitted at hospitals for treatment.

The country reported the 50th death from the virus just two days ago, a 77-year-old Maldivian man who was rushed to the emergency room of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in an unresponsive state, was declared dead on Thursday morning.

At a time Covid-19 cases have been spiking of recent, authorities have been raising concerns of facing a third wave of the pandemic, while they had been successful in controlling a second surge in Covid-19 cases, just a few months ago.

Although Maldives has received the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covishield vaccination manufactured by India's Serum Institute, the country's Food and Drug Authority (FDA) as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) are yet to give the green light to administer the 100,000 free doses delivered to the island nation, last week.
