With 79 new cases of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic reported on Wednesday, Maldives' Covid-19 tally has been pushed to 14,712.

Nightly statistics publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) reveal that 36 of the 79 new infections were reported from the Greater Malé Region with 35 new cases from resorts. Six of the new infections were detected from residential islands and two from liveaboard vessels.

The new infections were confirmed out of the 3,428 samples tested between 6pm Tuesday and 6pm Wednesday.

In addition, with 24 additional recoveries reported by sundown on Wednesday, the country has observed a total of 13,639 virus-stricken patients having recovered from the virus.

With Wednesday’s cases, Maldives active Covid-19 tally soars above 1,000 and is at 1,017. Out of this, 79 patients are currently hospitalized for treatment, which is six more than the previous day.

The pandemic has claimed 49 lives in the island nation since it surfaced from a resort on 7 March, last year.

Although authorities have been successful in controlling not one but two Covid-19 peaks over the course of the past few months, cases have been surging once again, over which healthcare professionals have been raising concern as it could result in the implementation of stricter measures in order to prevent a third wave.

Maldives received the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine manufactured in India’s Serum Institute on Wednesday afternoon.

The first consignment of 100,000 doses under a grant agreement, will cover frontline workers and the elderly, authorities confirm.
