Following the tragedy of lives taken in a plane crash in Indonesia, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid has extended condolences to his counterpart in Indonesia.

In a message of condolence to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno L.P. Marsudi, FM Shahid stated that he is saddened by the tragic news of the Sriwijaya flight SJ182, that killed over 60 people.

Expressing solidarity with the people and government of Indonesia at this time of national grief, FM Shahid extended heartfelt condolences to Minister Marsudi, the government of Indonesia and the families of the deceased on behalf of the government and the people of the Maldives at this hour of national grief and distress.

Further, he conveyed sincere condolences to the members of the bereaved families on behalf of the government and people of Maldives as well.

It was with deep shock and sorrow that I learned about the tragic news of the crash of Sriwijaya flight SJ182 off the coast of Java, shortly after taking off from Jakarta, causing the loss of lives of more than 60 people on 9 January 2021.”

Sriwijaya flight SJ182 was flying with 56 passengers and six crew members including seven children onboard when it plunged not long after takeoff, near Jakarta. Indonesia authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the crash, however, international media outlets report that the flight took off amid heavy monsoon rains and that it fell over 10,000 feet, “in less than a minute”.
